The principle
An element geyser converts electricity into heat one-for-one. A heat pump moves existing heat from the air into the water, so it delivers several units of heat per unit of electricity consumed. In practical Gauteng conditions that typically means a large reduction in water-heating energy, which is usually the biggest single item on a household bill.
Where savings are lost
- Oversized cylinders kept hot for no reason.
- Poor pipe insulation on long runs.
- Bad siting — a unit in a confined space recirculates its own cold discharge air.
- Incorrect scheduling that heats during the coldest part of the night.
What to ask for in a quote
Actual daily hot water demand, the cylinder integration method, pipe insulation spec, and the expected recovery time. A quote without those numbers is a guess.
